Happy New Year Students,

Today we are going to work on our books (p. 100-109). I also want you to write a descriptive paragraph on a goya. It should be about five sentences. Please give as much detail as possible and then post it here in this section. You do not have to use the work "goya" if you are careful about your information. Have fun...

Goya has green and rough surface. It is bitter vegetable. Because of its bitter taste, many children do not eat it willingly. Many children do not like it, but it is rich in vitamins. Goya is eaten as goya-chample in Okinawa. Goya-chample is fried goya with pork, tofu and other vegetables. Goya is very bitter, but it can become delicious depending on how you cook it.

“Goya” is one of very unique foods, and its name is only called in Okinawa. It is said that “Nigauri’ in mainland. It has a lot of unique features, and now, I want to describe three unique features of it. First of all, it is a very strange and gnarled shape. When people see it for the first time, almost all people are will surprised at its shape. It looks like one kinds of monstrous animal for me. Second, it is very unique taste. It is very difficult for me to tell you how taste it is, but I can say it is bitter and not good taste, and honestly speaking, I don’t like its taste. Finally, it is very good for your health, especially, summer fatigue. When you feel tired, I recommend you to eat it. Furthermore, I heard that it makes people good blood flow. Like this, it is a very healthy food not only summer season but also every day, and it is getting more famous day by day all over Japan. If you want to make good and healthy body, please eat “Goya”! It makes you powerful not only day time but night.

What’s a “goya”
Goya is very popular traditional food in Okinawa as kind of vegetable. But a lot of people don’t like goya especially in main land of Japan. I think there are two reasons why many people don’t eat it preferably. First of all, people hate the appearance of goya. Goya has a lot of knots on the surface, so people may feel that how grotesque, grim and rough this green vegetable is!!!! Second, its taste is so bitter. I guess it is the most bitter food in all of vegetables. Okinawan call it “goya” while people of main land call it “nigauri”. We can know that nigauri(goya) is bitter taste from the name. A bad first impression can occasionally cause the negative prejudgment. But it’s healthy and has nutrition and some vitamins. Yes Goya is healthy food for us.

It is a famous fruit for abundant vitamin C and it builds up our health. I do not like this vegetable, but I will describe it. It looks deep green on the outside and has very rough skin. It looks like be covered with spots. When you see it, you will not want to touch it because it has too spots to creepy. However, inside of it, it has a white pulp like sponge cake. Then, most notable point of it is heavy bitter taste. It is too bitter to eat although it gives us the good nutrition.

What’s a “Goya”?

Compared with other popular vegetables, it does not look like a vegetable. It is as green as other some vegetables; however, it has many small warts on its peel. It has a streamline shape, which is just like a crushed rugby ball. There is one pipe center of inside it, and a lot of white seed is there. The taste of it is very bitter, but the bitterness decreases after heating. In addition, it is rich in vitamin C, so it is good for whitening the skin.

GOYA

It is one of the Okinawan unique vegetables. It is about ten inches long, has bright green color, tastes bitter, and is covered with dents. Although its outside is tough, its inside is full of white soft thing like cotton with its seeds. When we eat it, we remove the white thing, and eat only its outside green part. Some children do not like it because of its bad taste, but it is loved by many people, and often served on the table especially in summer. The most popular dish cooked with it is “Chanpuru” mixed with eggs, tofu, and pork. In addition, we can eat and enjoy it as a salad, and drink as a juice. If you come to Okinawa, you should try this interesting, strange, rare and nourishing vegetable.

Goya

Goya indicates one of the traditional fruits in Okinawa although there is a Spanish painter who is called Francisco Jose de Goya in 18th century. It is green-colored, bitter taste, approximately 30cm long, and an indispensable product to symbolize Okinawa. Because of rich source of Vitamin C, Goya is known as healthy fruit and really popular in Japan. In other words, vitamin C deficiency cause scurvy and other diseases thus Goya is helpful and reliable to prevent them in hot summer. There are numerous Goya products in Okinawa such as Goya tempura, Goya juice, Goya chanpuru, and Goya burger. In spite of the fact that I have not eaten Goya burger and Goya juice, I love Goya tempura and Goya chanpuru, and it is not bitter after cooking. In order to better understand what Goya is, I recommend people around the world to come to Okinawa at least one time and eat it.

Goya is a very unique vegetable. The body is fresh green, and it has very strong bitter taste. It looks little strange because it has many warts all over the body. Inside of it, there are many yellow seeds and white stuff like cotton. This white cotton is a main factor of goya’s bitter taste. When people eat goya, they always take it away before cooking. Okinawan people often eat goya in particular. There are many way to cook goya in Okinawa. Goya is unique and useful vegetable which is often used for many Okinawan foods.

What’s a Goya?

The goya is a cucurbitaceous vegetable (actually, however, fruit) with deep-green color, 20-30cm long, 5-6cm in diameter, and a lot of lumps and bumps. Because of the grotesque appearance, people who see it for the first time do not believe that it is food. And in accordance with its outward, the taste is very much bitter, which causes it to be known as a bitter melon. You may not want to eat such a hundred-harm-and-no-good plant, but the goya has astonishingly plenty of nutrition within which blows all the disadvantages away. It contains abundant vitamin C, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, fiber and many other nutrients. So, why don’t you have a try to goya champuru? It will be not only unexpectedly delicious, but makes you very healthy.

Goya is the green vegetable and has lumps. It is very bitter taste, that’s why I hate it. It is a vegetable native to tropical Asia, and they eat it in variety of cooking methods, also Okinawan people eat it very often. It has many methods of cooking in Okinawa too, Goya tempura, Goya Champuru (Goya fried with pork), salad, juice and so on. It is nutritious, especially vitamin C which is effective against summer fatigue, so Okinawan people like it. I recommend eating it in summer, if you don’t want to experience summer fatigue.

They considered it as a healthy vegetable. They put them into salad, fry with chickens, and make tempura. Some people do not like goya because of it’s bitter taste, but it is really good for your health.

It is green-skinned long-oval shaped edible plant and looks like a fat cucumber with lots of spots on the surface. The size is normally around ten to twenty-five centimeters. It usually bears small yellow flowers on every summer. It tastes quite bitter. Outside of it is little bit hard but inside is soft. Most people do not eat inside of it.

Goya

It is a green eatable plant, and many small ragged projections are on its surface. Its shape is like a sweet potato, and it’s about twenty centimeters in length and about six centimeters in diameter. In a goya, there is something white and soft like cotton, which is called ‘wata’, and there are also white seeds. It’s usually called ‘goya’ in Okinawa, however, people in the Mainland of Japan normally call it ‘nigauri’. It tastes bitter, but it’s famous for Okinawan healthy food. It is often cut in round slices and cooked as Goya Champuru mostly with an egg, a tofu, and pork in Okinawa.

Goya is the most popular fruit in Okinawa. Its color is green but sometimes yellow, and its shape is rugged. The length of it is about twenty centimeter. In Okinawa, some people plant Goya in their garden, and you can see some Goyas in there during summer. My grandfather also plant them, and sometimes gives us them. When we eat Goya, we usually cook “Goya tympru” means fried vegetables. Since Goya is very bitter, we fry it with onions, poke, and eggs. I like it very much, but some people don’t seem to like Goya’s bitter taste.

Bitter Melon
For me this is a very ugly vegetable but delicious and full of vitamins. I love its brilliant green color, which attracted me the first time I saw it in the supermarket. If you want to enjoy its flavor, you have to slice it very thin and soak it in salty cold water for at least twenty minutes, after that you have to squeeze out the salty water and put it on a plate; now you have to be ready to have a delicious snack in front of you. If you prefer, you can cook it in a frying pan mixing it with tofu and sliced pork. I also love the harsh and acrid taste of this vegetable. I should say that I agree with little kids that hate it, but I think that there is a time for everything in this life, and if you want to enjoy this special flavor the best age to try it is after you are twenty years old, together with a very cold beer.

Goya is one of summer vegetables, most color is green and surface is very rough. Then its size is variety; from big and thick to long and thin. Eating it, we can get taste bitter.
So it is difficult for children to eat Goya too bitter. Because it has many vitamins, however, we can defend suffering from the summer heat and get promotion of appetite. Consequently Goya is a vegetable which is good to eat especially in summer.

I would like to introduce something today. This color is green, and this have ragged surface and ellipse feature, and tastes very bitter. The name of the thing is Goya. Goya is Okinawa’s special fruit, and another name is Nigauri which means “bitter gourd.” There are a lot of seeds inside the Goya, and when we use in a cooking, we must get rid of this seeds. Goya champulu, stir-fry cooking using Goya is Okinawa’s home-made cooking. Goya is healthy thing and good medicine for health.

Goya

Goya is loved in Okinawa as a healthy vegetable. But it has a strange appearance, which is green body and covered with a lot of lumps. If people see a goya for the first time, they seem to think it is grotesque. And it is not only strange appearance, but also tastes so bitter. In this way, goya has many negative points, but it contains many minerals and vitamin C. So in fact, goya is a special vegetable which is good for our health.

Goya is one of the most famous Okinawan vegetables in Japan. The rough surface of goya is green, but its content is white and sometimes red. We do not eat goya very much, which has red content. We usually fry goya with tofu and pork, and then we can taste a little bitter. The fried dish is called goya-chample. Most of Japanese except people in Okinawa think that all Okinawan people like the dish, but some of them hate it. However, people who love goya eat it raw, deep fried and pickled. You may be able to like goya if you try eating it in several ways.

What’s a “goya”?

Goya is a vegetable characterized by its harshness bitter taste and the spines on it. It can be gathered in warm, humid area like Okinawa. Because goya is very rich in vitamin, we all know it as a healthy vegetable. In Okinawa, goya is used for a common Okinawan dish such as goya-chanpuru which fried with pork, tofu and any other vegetables. One of the factor of its harshness is something white like cotton in its core. We eat goya without its core and sprinkling salt on it to remove its harshness.
